Exhibits
The Stars and Stripes National Museum and Library showcases pivotal moments in modern history through its exhibits and programs. From the first issue printed by Union troops in November 1861 to the wars of the 20th century and beyond, the museum provides a unique and significant perspective on the history of the Stars and Stripes.

The Civil War Room
On November 9, 1861, a group of 10 Union soldiers from Southern Illinois took control of the Bloomfield Herald and successfully printed the first edition of the Stars and Stripes newspaper. Discover the motivations behind the publication of this paper and explore other noteworthy editions produced during the Civil War.
The WWI Room
As visitors enter the WWI room, they will be greeted with the captivating Meuse-Argonne display, and the opportunity to delve into the stories of the main editors, cartoonists, and the captivating Doughboy poetry featured in the WWI Stars and Stripes newspaper.

WWII Area
Welcome to the WWII Room, an immersive tribute to the bravery of those who served during World War II. This 3,300 square foot space features exhibits like the Battle of Bastogne, showcasing American troop courage, and 1/72 scale models of WWII aircraft. Explore historical vehicles, including the Command Car, Half Track, and M37 Dodge (RAT Rig) for communication and operations. Gain insights from Captain McNamara’s D-Day journal and view a rare Mid-Pacific edition of the paper. Discover artifacts from the USS Missouri, honoring the legacy of those who fought for freedom.


Korean War Section
The Korean War Exhibit at the Stars and Stripes National Museum and Library provides insight into the experiences of soldiers during the conflict. A key feature is the Chosin Frozen Two-Man Bunker, a reconstruction that highlights the harsh realities faced during the brutal winter of 1950. The exhibit also includes a notable photograph of President Dwight D. Eisenhower by Striper Red Grandy, showcasing U.S. leadership, along with compelling images by Striper Frank Parytor that document the daily lives of soldiers. Together, these elements create a powerful tribute to the courage and sacrifices made during the Korean War.
Vietnam War Section
Join us in this exhibit as we showcase two former Stripers, Gary Cooper and Steve Kroft. Experience the intensity of a fire fight in Vietnam through Gary’s captivating photos, accompanied by artifacts that offer a glimpse into the past. Additionally, witness Steve’s iconic field jacket, symbolizing his dedication and service to Stars and Stripes. Modern Era
Explore the section that highlights the Gulf War to present-day, featuring memorabilia from Striper Ron Jensen and Kevin Dougherty‘s 1984 laptop, which offers a fascinating glimpse into the past. Additionally, be captivated by a photo exhibit showcasing the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, providing a unique perspective on these pivotal moments in history.
