Ron Jensen
Introduction
We are proud to feature Ron Jensen in our Striper Spotlight. He is a distinguished journalist with European Stars & Stripes. His career captured pivotal moments in modern military and global history. Born in 1952, Ron grew up on an Illinois farm. His father was a World War II veteran. Ron’s early fascination with military stories began by reading Bill Mauldin’s war memoir, Up Front. This personal connection to history shaped his remarkable tenure at Stripes.
Career at European Stars & Stripes
Ron joined European Stars & Stripes in Germany in November 1988. He brought 12 years of experience from daily newspapers in Illinois, Kansas, and Oklahoma. Just one year later, he reported on the fall of the Berlin Wall. He thought this world-changing event would be the peak of his career. Yet, Ron’s journey with Stripes went far beyond that moment. He covered Operation Desert Storm from Saudi Arabia. He also reported on military operations in Somalia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Iraq. As NATO Bureau reporter in 1999, he documented NATO’s historic expansion. This included welcoming the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland into the alliance. Ron worked from bureaus in Germany, Belgium, and the United Kingdom. He brought critical military stories to light with dedication.
Personal Connection and Memorable Moments
One of Ron’s cherished memories was meeting Bill Mauldin. This iconic WWII cartoonist inspired him as a boy. They met during the newspaper’s 50th anniversary celebration in 1992. This moment symbolized a deep link between his personal roots and professional mission.
Life After Stripes
Ron left Stripes in 2005. He continued his commitment to military storytelling as editor of National Guard magazine in Washington, D.C. Now retired, he lives in Galesburg, Illinois. He often reflects on his Stripes experiences in a column for a local weekly. This keeps the spirit of military journalism alive.
