Exhibits
The Stars and Stripes National Museum and Library showcases pivotal moments in modern history through its exhibits and programs. From the first issue printed by Union troops in November 1861 to the wars of the 20th century and beyond, the museum provides a unique and significant perspective on the history of the Stars and Stripes.
The Civil War Room
On November 9, 1861, a group of 10 Union soldiers from Southern Illinois took control of the Bloomfield Herald and successfully printed the first edition of the Stars and Stripes newspaper. Discover the motivations behind the publication of this paper and explore other noteworthy editions produced during the Civil War.
The WWI Room
As visitors enter through our replica WWI trench, they will have the opportunity to delve into the stories of the main editors, cartoonists, and the captivating Doughboy poetry featured in the WWI Stars and Stripes newspaper.
WWII Area
Step into the WWII area, where the spotlight shines on the historic D-Day events. Immerse yourself in the atmosphere as you witness a WWII dog tag machine in action, capturing the essence of that era. Korean War Section
In this exhibit, we pay tribute to two former Stripers, Bob McNeil and Frank Praytor, who played significant roles in the history of Stars and Stripes. Explore the compelling photos taken by Frank during the Korean conflict, offering a unique perspective on this pivotal moment in history. Join us as we celebrate their contributions and honor their legacy.
Vietnam War Section
Join us in this exhibit as we showcase two former Stripers, Gary Cooper and Steve Kroft. Experience the intensity of a fire fight in Vietnam through Gary’s captivating photos, accompanied by artifacts that offer a glimpse into the past. Modern Era
