FOR AGES 10-14
June 24-28, 2024 at the Museum
10AM to 4PM each day
The 2nd Annual Journalism Summer Camp will be held Monday, June 24 to Friday, June 28, 2024 from 10am to 4pm each day at The Stars and Stripes National Museum and Library. This year’s camp theme is U.S. Conflicts: The 1860s vs. The 1960s in the Words of Enlisted Troops and Civilians.
During camp, participants will:
- Utilize the Stars and Stripes Newspaper Archive from the Civil War and Vietnam War eras to learn about significant events.
- Listen to first-person impressions from Civil War living historians and read excerpts from the diaries and journals of real soldiers and civilians from the local area and share how the war affected them.
- Interview veterans and civilians of the Vietnam War era and find out how the war affected them.
- Compare and contrast the two wars to identify similarities and differences.
- Learn the steps necessary to report a historical event objectively and factually without bias.
- Participate as members of the news team to produce the 2nd Annual Stars and Stripes Journalism Camp Newspaper Kids Edition.
Along with the Museum’s Education Director Sheila Porter, the camp staff and volunteers will include faculty and graduate students from the MU School of Journalism, Civil War living historians, and Vietnam veterans.
From Monday to Thursday, students should bring their lunch. Weather permitting, time will be spent outdoors for breaks and activities with the Civil War living historians, so appropriate footwear and clothing should be worn.
This day camp is open to children who will be in 5th through 8th grades this fall (ages 10-14) that have an interest in U.S. history, writing, and/or reporting. The registration fee is $50. Registration includes all activities, an exclusive camp T-shirt, daily snacks, and lunch on Friday.
The registration deadline is June 13, 2024. Space is limited to 25 campers, so register early!
