Occupy Bloomfield 2026: A Civil War Living History Experience
Relive the Pivotal Moments of 1861–1865 at the Stars and Stripes National Museum
Step back in time at the Stars and Stripes National Museum and Library for a day of immersive history! On Saturday, July 25, 2026, from 10 am to 4 pm, we invite families, students, and history enthusiasts to our 3rd Annual Occupy Bloomfield event. This interactive experience transports you to the tumultuous years of the American Civil War, a time when the town of Bloomfield and the surrounding Southeast Missouri region were critical hotbeds of military activity.
A Town Divided: The History of the Occupation
Bloomfield holds a unique and prestigious place in American military history. During the Civil War, the town was a strategic prize, having been occupied over 20 times by both Union and Confederate forces. The shifting front lines meant that residents never knew which flag would be flying over the courthouse from one week to the next.
It was during one of these intense occupations in November 1861 that ten Union soldiers from the 18th Illinois Volunteer Infantry—who were printers by trade—found the local newspaper office abandoned. Utilizing the existing press, they printed the very first edition of the Stars and Stripes newspaper, beginning a legacy of military journalism that continues to this day.
