The Earthquakes That Changed the Mississippi River – Dec 17

History After Hours: The Earthquakes That Changed the Mississippi River

Discover the story of the New Madrid earthquakes during History After Hours on Thursday, December 17, 2026, at 6 p.m. Join Jeff Grunwald of the New Madrid Historical Museum at the Stars and Stripes National Museum and Library in Bloomfield, Missouri.

Presented by the Stoddard County Historical Society and the Stars and Stripes National Museum and Library, this free program explores an extraordinary chapter in our region’s history. Everyone is welcome, and refreshments will be served.

Explore the New Madrid Earthquakes of 1811–1812

In 1811 and 1812, a series of powerful earthquakes struck the New Madrid region. The shaking altered the landscape and changed the Mississippi River and surrounding areas.

What happened during these earthquakes? How did they affect the river and nearby communities? Why does their story remain important today?

Jeff Grunwald will explore these questions and help visitors understand the earthquakes’ place in southeast Missouri’s history. His presentation offers an opportunity to consider how a natural event can change both the landscape and the lives of the people who call a region home.

Whether you enjoy local history, have an interest in the Mississippi River, or simply want to learn more about the place where you live, this program offers a memorable subject to explore.
