Striper Spotlight: Malcolm Stiles

From Army Auditor to Special Assistant to the Commander for The Stars & Stripes

My name is Malcolm Stiles.  I am 88 and I live in Olympia, Washington, with my wife, who is 87.  We have five children, all retired or on the verge of retirement,  All of them live in the United States except for one who is in Japan.  We have ten grandchildren.  

I was born in Asbury Park, New Jersey, and brought up in Queens, New York City.  I graduated from New York University with bachelor degrees in Accounting and Finance.  (I earned an MBA in Japan in1968.)  After graduating from NYU, I entered the service where I was stationed in Japan as an Army Auditor.  I met my wife in Japan, where we married in 1959. 

Immediately upon discharge from the Army, in 1959, I went to work with the Pacific Stars & Stripes, as Internal Auditor, GS-7.  Over the years, I held jobs as Deputy Comptroller, Comptroller, Business Manager, Product Manager, and General Manager, before retiring as Special Assistant to the Commander, GS-15, in 1996. 

While at Stripes, I always worked from the Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, but I traveled extensively, in various capacities, all around Japan, and to Korea, Okinawa, Taiwan, the Philippines, Guam, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand, Wake. Midway, Hawaii, Germany and the Continental United States.
