Striper Spotlight: Toshi Cooper

Toshi Tokunaga Cooper

Toshi Cooper worked at the Public Information Office at Allied Headquarters in Tokyo after World War II to improve her English by helping American journalists translate information for their articles. Major Fred May, chief of the news section, was impressed by Cooper and asked her to work for the Pacific Stars and Stripes newspaper as a librarian. Cooper worked for the paper in several capacities for the next 23 years and married fellow Striper Gary Cooper in 1970. She retired from the paper the following year but continued to serve as a chairman emeritus for the Stars and Stripes Alumni Association. You can learn more about Toshi by visiting the Museum.
